Jarrett Tomas Barrios was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1968. He is the product of a blue collar Latino family: his father was a carpenter and his mother was a social worker. He came to Cambridge at the age of 17 to study at Harvard College. In 1998, he was elected as the State Representative for the 28th Middlesex District. He was reelected in 2000 without opposition.
